What is it?
‘Aha Punana Leo are a group of privately based, nonprofit schools that are administered and instructed in the Hawaiian language. ‘Aha Punana Leo was the first indigenous language immersion program in the United States, and opened illegally in 1984 on the island of Kauai. There are currently 11 Punana Leo language schools that service 3 and 4 year olds on the islands of Oahu, Hawaii, Maui, Molokai, and Kauai. Parents of students enrolled in the program are required to learn the Hawaiian language to 
reinforce language learning at home. Non-Hawaiian speaking families are required to attend weekly classes in order to learn Hawaiian. Students enrolled within the program come from many backgrounds and Hawaiian ethnicity is not a requirement.

na Leoは初め、地元の言葉を教えるプログラムをアメリカに浸透させ違法の状態で１９８４年に開いた。」現在、オアフ、ハワイ、マウイ、モロカイ、カウアイ島で計１１のPunana Leo語学学校が３、４年前よりハワイ語教育を行っている。両親達もこのプログラムに加入し、家での学習の強化のためハワイ語を学ぶことを必要とした。ハワイ語を学ぶためにハワイ語が話せない人々も毎週クラスに参加するよう義務付けられた。プログラムに参加している生徒はいろいろな経歴をもっており、ハワイ人である必要はなかった。全ての参加者に整った環境と経験を提供するために
